Best Airport for Visiting Santa Teresa: Liberia, San José or Cóbano?

Best Airport Option when Getting to Santa Teresa in Costa Rica

Choosing the best airport for Santa Teresa starts with looking at your complete journey. Your international flight, arrival time, luggage and transportation to your hotel all play a part in how comfortably your vacation begins.

Cóbano Airport (ACO) is the closest of these three options to Santa Teresa. For travelers arriving internationally, Liberia Airport (LIR) and San José Airport (SJO) are the main gateways to compare. You can continue by ground transportation or, when connections work, take a domestic flight into Cóbano.

At Tropical Tours Shuttles, our main office is in Santa Teresa, and we have more than 20 years of experience connecting travelers across Costa Rica. Our advice is to consider your arrival and departure plans together before purchasing flights. A convenient journey to the beach deserves an equally well-planned return.

Liberia Airport (LIR): A Convenient Option Through Guanacaste

Liberia Airport is worth considering when you find a convenient international flight or want to include Guanacaste in your vacation. It can fit naturally into a trip combining Santa Teresa with destinations such as Tamarindo, Nosara, Sámara or the Papagayo area.

One practical advantage is that our Liberia Airport–Santa Teresa shuttle route travels overland without a ferry. That removes ferry departure times from the planning process, although traffic, weather and road conditions still matter.

Liberia is also worth comparing if you prefer to continue by ground transportation after your international flight. Check the landing time carefully: the onward journey to Santa Teresa takes several hours, so the time you reach Costa Rica can make a considerable difference to your first evening.

You can review the available services on our Liberia Airport to Santa Teresa transportation page.

San José Airport (SJO): Ground Transfers and Domestic Connections

San José Airport gives you the option of continuing by ground transportation or connecting to a domestic flight. When comparing international tickets, consider how each arrival fits with your preferred onward travel.

For a ground transfer, leave time between your scheduled landing and pickup for immigration, baggage collection and customs. A flight’s arrival time is the beginning of that process; you still need to make your way out of the terminal.

Shared shuttles follow scheduled departures, while private transportation offers greater flexibility with pickup arrangements. If your journey includes a ferry crossing, its timetable also needs to fit into the plan. Our San José Airport to Santa Teresa transportation page provides the current service details.

If you are considering flying onward, SANSA lists domestic service between San José and Cóbano. Check the connection requirements with the airline before booking, especially when your international and domestic flights are on separate reservations.

Cóbano Airport (ACO): Arriving Closer to Santa Teresa

Cóbano Airport is an appealing option for travelers who want a shorter final road journey to Santa Teresa. It serves as a regional arrival point, bringing you closer to your accommodation after a domestic flight.

The flight connection still deserves careful attention. Compare the total time from your international arrival to your hotel, including airport procedures, the wait between flights and the final transfer. A short flight can be convenient, but a long connection may change how much time it saves.

Check baggage allowances and confirm acceptance of surfboards or other oversized items before purchasing your domestic ticket. Make sure every part of the journey can accommodate what you are bringing.

You will also need transportation from Cóbano Airport to your accommodation. Share your hotel’s exact name and location when arranging your Cóbano Airport transfer, since the final journey depends on where you are staying.

Airlines to Compare When Booking Your Flights

Your preferred airline can help narrow down the airport choice. For travelers flying from the United States, Southwest and American Airlines are two of our personal favorites to compare.

Both offer service to San José and Liberia, with available itineraries depending on your departure city and travel dates. Check the options directly with Southwest and American Airlines.

Travelers from the Tampa Bay area also have a newer option. Breeze Airways launched nonstop service between Tampa (TPA) and San José (SJO) on October 3, 2026, adding another way to reach Costa Rica before continuing to Santa Teresa. Tampa International Airport’s announcement provides details about the route.

When comparing flights, look at arrival times alongside fares. An itinerary that leaves enough time for a comfortable onward connection may suit your trip better than a cheaper ticket with a late arrival.

Ferry Schedules Affect Getting to Santa Teresa

How Ferry Schedules Affect Getting to Santa Teresa

If your transportation uses the Puntarenas–Paquera ferry, account for the drive to the terminal, boarding, the crossing and the road journey on the other side.

The ferry operates on a timetable. Missing a departure can mean a substantial wait, so avoid planning a connection around everything happening at the earliest possible moment. Check the official ferry schedule close to your travel date and confirm how it fits with your transportation arrangements.

A private shuttle can offer flexibility with pickup times, but a trip using the ferry still depends on its departures. This is particularly relevant when considering an afternoon or evening arrival at SJO.

Our Liberia–Santa Teresa route does not require a ferry, and the road transfer between Cóbano Airport and Santa Teresa does not involve a crossing either. Those differences are useful when comparing airport options.

Planning Your Return From Santa Teresa to the Airport

Your return flight deserves the same attention as your arrival. Before booking, consider what time you would need to leave your accommodation to reach the airport comfortably.

Work backward from the time your airline recommends arriving at the airport. Include the ground transportation, ferry connection where applicable and a reasonable allowance for delays.

If you have an early flight from San José, consider traveling the previous day and staying near the airport. This can make departure morning more manageable, particularly for families or travelers with several flight connections ahead.

If you plan to fly from Cóbano to connect with an international departure, confirm the connection requirements with the airline and leave adequate time between flights.

Compare the Total Cost of Reaching Santa Teresa

Add together your international airfare, any domestic flight, baggage charges, ground transportation and a possible overnight stay.

For families and groups, calculate the cost for everyone traveling. Several domestic tickets and baggage charges can change the comparison with a private ground transfer. For a solo traveler, a scheduled shared shuttle may fit the budget differently.

Also consider how much traveling you want to do after a long flight. A late arrival, tired children or a full day of connections may make an overnight stop a welcome part of the itinerary.

Extra Planning Tips for Families and Surfers

Surfers should check equipment arrangements throughout the journey. Confirm your board bag’s dimensions and weight with the relevant airlines, and provide those details when requesting transportation.

Families should share children’s ages and any child-seat requirements in advance. Consider how flight connections, meal breaks and the timing of the final transfer will affect everyone traveling.

Your accommodation’s exact location matters too. Provide the property name and address when requesting transportation so the arrival plan accounts for the final journey to your hotel or vacation rental.
