Morning waves, warm evenings and Pacific sunsets Santa Teresa, Nosara and Tamarindo all offer plenty to look forward to. But choosing between them becomes much easier when you understand what staying in each place is actually like.
At Tropical Tours Shuttles, we help travelers get between these destinations and the rest of Costa Rica. From our home base in Santa Teresa, we know how much a hotel’s location, an airport arrival time or a transfer day can shape a vacation.
Here’s our advice for choosing a beach town that fits your plans and enjoying it once you arrive.
The main differences at a glance
- Santa Teresa is a great choice for surf, sunsets, boutique accommodations and relaxed days on the southern Nicoya Peninsula. The area stretches along the coast, so choose your hotel carefully: staying near your favorite beach access and restaurants can make everyday outings much easier.
- Nosara suits travelers who want to combine surfing with yoga, wellness and a slower daily routine. Pay attention to the neighborhood when booking. Staying close to the beach, classes or activities you plan to enjoy can help you spend more time relaxing and less time arranging rides.
- Tamarindo offers beach time alongside a lively selection of restaurants, shops, surf lessons and evening activities. Staying near the center makes many everyday outings convenient on foot, while accommodations farther from town may offer a quieter setting with more transportation planning.

Santa Teresa: for travelers who want to settle into beach life
Santa Teresa is a wonderful choice when your ideal vacation includes surfing, a leisurely breakfast, time by the beach and somewhere beautiful to watch the sunset.
You can build your stay around a boutique hotel, a surf-focused property or a private villa. Couples, friends and families can all find a version of Santa Teresa that works for them.
The detail we recommend paying most attention to is where you will stay.
Playa Carmen, Santa Teresa, Playa Hermosa and Mal País are different parts of the wider area. A hotel close to the restaurants and beach access you plan to use can make daily life straightforward. A hillside villa may give you privacy and a beautiful view, but you should also plan how you will get to dinner, buy groceries and return after dark.
Before booking, ask the property for its location pin and a realistic description of the walk to the beach. “Close to the beach” does not always tell you about the slope, road or entrance you will use.
If you’re planning a stay at Nantipa in Santa Teresa, explore our Nantipa hotel transportation options to find shared shuttles and private transfers that fit your travel plans.
Our local tip: Choose your accommodation around the places you expect to visit most often. That small decision can save you repeated trips up and down the coast.

Nosara: for surf, yoga and a slower pace
Nosara is a strong choice if you want your vacation to have a comfortable routine: a surf session or yoga class in the morning, a relaxed lunch and time outside before sunset.
It particularly suits travelers who want wellness to be part of their stay. You can keep your days simple or organize them around lessons, classes and other activities.
When comparing accommodations, look beyond the word “Nosara.” Check whether the property is in the town, around Playa Guiones, near Playa Pelada or farther inland. Those locations can produce very different daily travel needs.
If surfing is your priority, consider how you will reach your lesson meeting point with a board. If you are joining a retreat, find out whether meals, classes and transportation are included. A property that works beautifully for a retreat guest may be less convenient for someone planning to explore independently.

Our local tip: Pick your main activity first, then choose accommodation that makes getting there easy. Being close to the class or beach entrance you will use every morning can be more valuable than an extra hotel amenity.

Tamarindo: for beach time with more on your doorstep
Tamarindo is a good starting point if you want a beach vacation with plenty of restaurants, shops, surf services and evening options nearby.
Its central area makes it easier to combine different interests. One person can take a surf lesson while another browses the shops, and everyone can meet for lunch without organizing a separate excursion.
This can work especially well for a first visit, a shorter beach stay or a group with different ideas about how to spend the day.
Location still matters. A central hotel can make walking to meals and activities easier, while a property outside the main town may suit travelers who prefer more separation from the activity. Check both the daytime convenience and the evening atmosphere before choosing.

Our local tip: If you want a holiday without arranging frequent local rides, make a short list of your hotel, beach access and a few restaurants. Check the walking routes between them before booking.
Choose your airport with the whole journey in mind
A flight’s arrival time matters just as much as its price. Before booking, look at how you will get from the airport to your accommodation and whether your flight connects comfortably with a scheduled shuttle.
For a useful comparison, our route pages currently list these approximate shared-shuttle travel times from Liberia Airport:
| Route | Approximate travel time after departure |
|---|---|
| Liberia Airport to Tamarindo | 2 hours |
| Liberia Airport to Nosara | 2 hours 30 minutes |
| Liberia Airport to Santa Teresa | 5 hours 30 minutes |
These are travel estimates, not guaranteed arrival times. Allow additional time for immigration, baggage collection and the wait until your scheduled departure. Traffic, weather, stops and your accommodation’s location can also affect the journey.
If you are considering San José Airport, compare the onward connection with the rest of your itinerary. The most useful flight is the one that works with your arrival day, beach stay and next destination.
Send us your flight details before choosing a shuttle, and we can help you check the connection.
Do you need a rental car?
You can plan a stay in any of these destinations without renting a car, provided your accommodation and daily activities fit that choice.
A shuttle takes care of the journey between destinations. You should also think about the smaller trips during your stay: reaching a restaurant, buying groceries or getting back from an evening out.
Before deciding, ask your accommodation:
- What can we comfortably walk to?
- Are there hills or stretches of road to consider?
- How can we arrange local rides, including in the evening?
- Can our transfer vehicle reach the property entrance?
For a hillside villa or a rental outside the main visitor area, send the exact map pin when requesting transportation. It helps us confirm access and coordinate the right pickup or drop-off point.
Compare the full cost of your stay
Accommodation is only one part of your beach budget.
A lower room rate may come with more spending on local rides. A centrally located property may cost more per night but make meals and activities easier to reach. For a group, compare the total shared-shuttle cost with a private transportation quote.
Include the things you actually plan to use: surf lessons, equipment, yoga classes, meals, activities and transportation. This gives you a much more useful comparison than labeling an entire town “cheap” or “expensive.”
Traveling with children or learning to surf?
All three destinations can work for families, but the property often makes the biggest difference. Convenient meals, manageable beach access and space to relax can matter more than the town’s reputation.
For beginner surfers, arrange a lesson with a local instructor who can choose an appropriate location and time for the conditions. A beach’s reputation for surfing does not mean every section is suitable for every ability or for swimming with children.
Should you visit more than one beach town?
You can, but give each stop enough time to be worthwhile.
Our recommendation for a relaxed beach stay is at least three or four nights in your chosen destination. That gives you time to arrive, settle in and enjoy a few full days before packing again.
For a shorter vacation, one beach destination combined with an inland stop such as La Fortuna or Monteverde can offer more variety. For a longer surf-focused trip, visiting two beach towns may be exactly what you want.
Remember to count the transfer as part of the itinerary. Our Santa Teresa to Tamarindo route is a journey of several hours, so it deserves its own space in your plans. Keep arrival-day activities flexible.
Let’s help you put the trip together
Choose Santa Teresa for a stay centered on surf, sunsets and exploring the southern Nicoya Peninsula. Choose Nosara when surf and wellness are at the heart of your plans. Choose Tamarindo when you want beach time alongside a greater concentration of restaurants, activities and evening options.
Then make the practical details work for you: the right hotel location, a sensible airport connection and enough time to enjoy each stop.
